About Us

Founded in 1959, the OJC is greater Rockland County's fastest-growing Conservative congregation, with close to 500 member-families. We're an egalitarian synagogue, devoted to promoting the highest ethical, moral and religious standards while fostering respect for ourselves and others.  Emphasis is placed on the values of connection to God, Torah study and attachment to Israel.

Clergy & Professional Staff

Rabbi Craig Scheff has been OJC's spiritual leader since 1996. Regarded as one of the area's most prominent young rabbis, Rabbi Scheff is revered for his energetic, enlightening and inspirational approach to Jewish life, worship, learning and philanthropy. Our associate rabbi, Rabbi Paula Mack Drill, joined the OJC clergy team in 2004.  A social worker prior to becoming a rabbi, Rabbi Drill brings a unique blend of social consciousness and personal relationships to our community.  The rabbis are assisted on the pulpit by Cantor Vadim Yucht, who joined the OJC community in 1999.  Cantor Yucht’s melodic renditions of our liturgy stir the soul and ensure spiritual, passionate prayer experiences.

Sandra Peck-Borowsky, our Educational Director, has been in Rockland County since 1981 where she has been a pre-school, formal, and informal Jewish educator in a variety of educational settings including local synagogues and the JCC-Y. Previous to becoming the Orangetown Jewish Center’s Educational Director, Sandy was the Principal of Pelham Manor Jewish Center in Westchester County for three years.

Our Youth Director Sharon Rappaport is a native of Rockland County.   Sharon worked at Beth Am Temple in Pearl River and at Temple Ner Tamid in Bloomfield, NJ from 1991-2006  as Youth Director, Confirmation/Coordinator and Religious School teacher. It is Sharon’s distinct pleasure to serve in her role as USY advisor and serve as OJC’s Youth Director.
