Young Families

At the Orangetown Jewish Center, families with young children are always a primary focus. Through a robust and diverse programming schedule we seek to engage people of all ages where they are comfortable as we build a friendly and enriching community together.  Shabbat morning experiences for all ages, monthly family friendly Friday night services, Sunday morning playground hangouts and family holiday programs are all pieces of the array of offerings.  All of this certainly makes the OJC the place to be!

Read below about our ongoing programs to find out more about what the OJC has to offer to our Young Families.  In addition to these ongoing programs there are always new unique experiences.  Please make sure to "Like" the OJC Facebook page to stay abreast of all the happenings for Young Families.  The “Family Room” is located just outside of the Sanctuary.  Feel free to hang out, relax and meet other families with young children when you are in the building.

The Young Family committee works on a whole variety of programs and projects.  We are always looking for people to help. For more information and opportunities for Families with Young Children at the Orangetown Jewish Center, please contact Rabbi Ami Hersh, Jewish Family Life Coordinator.

Friday Nights

Shabbat Family Services: Held on the 1st Friday of each month at 6:00 pm in our Sanctuary, this service is geared towards grades 1-6 and their grownups.

Early Kabbalat Shabbat (EKS): Held on the 3rd Friday of each month at 5:45pm in our Daily Chapel, this musical service and story telling is geared towards 0-5 year olds and their grownups.

Saturday Mornings

Shabbaba Shabbat:  Starting each week at 11:00am in our “Family Room” this service is geared towards 0-5 year olds and their grownups.  It follows an interactive and musical format that encourages both young children and adults to explore the spiritual aspects of Shabbat.  The service always ends with the children joining the Sanctuary service for the concluding prayers.  The service is conducted on a co-op model by parents in our community and teenage volunteer leaders.  Please email Rabbi Hersh if you are interested in helping to lead this service.

Family Congregation:  Starting each week at 10:30am in our Daily Chapel this service is geared towards grades 1-6 and their grownups.  The service allows children to experiment as prayer leaders as they become more comfortable with the words and tunes of our tradition.   Our rabbis and youth leaders will lead this exciting weekly experience.

Saturday Evenings

Pajama Havdalah: On select Saturday evenings parents and their children are invited to conclude Shabbat with a beautiful Havdalah service.  Children are encouraged to attend in pajamas!  A child friendly movie will be played on the big screen and snacks will be served so both children and adults can socialize and meet some new friends.

Sunday Mornings

Sunday Morning Playground Hangout: Parents of young children are often up early…REALLY early.  Come hang out with friends and meet new people at the OJC playground.  Bring some coffee and have the chance to talk with other adults while the kids play!  Starting at 9:00am on select Sundays.
