OJC PRIDE

OJC Pride is a committee of synagogue members, clergy and professional staff that works for full LGBTQ inclusion in our synagogue. OJC is proud to be part of the third cohort of synagogues and organizations to be trained by United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism and Keshet, a national grassroots organization that works for the inclusion of the LGBTQ community in Jewish life.

In our first year of work we accomplished the following action items:

  1. Create a print and social media presence that educates and advocates, ensuring that OJC is known as a safe and welcoming synagogue for people who identify as LGBTQ.

  2. Train our committee and synagogue Board of Trustees to better understand how to strengthen LGBTQ-inclusive programming, policy and culture.

  3. Study synagogue and religious school policies to ensure that non-discrimination and anti-bullying policies include sexual orientation and gender identity and expression.

  4. Create engagement with the LGBTQ community through programming on LGBT themes including Youth Shabbat Day of Silence (April 12-13), Pride Shabbat (May 31-June 1), participation in Rockland Pride Center celebration (June 23), and Pride month filled with activity and social media education.
